Melker Widell joins Swansea City
We are pleased to announce that Sweden Under-21 international, Melker Widell, has joined Swansea City from AaB Aalborg.
The 22-year-old midfielder has committed to a contract that runs until June 2029. He will be loaned back to Aalborg for the remainder of the 2024-25 season to continue his development, before linking up with Swansea for the 2025-26 campaign.
Widell has been a long-term target for Swansea, having first been identified by the club’s recruitment team months ago as a promising young player with the potential to make an impact in the Championship. When the opportunity to secure his services arose, the club acted swiftly. While the Danish Superliga is on its winter break, Widell travelled to the UK from Aalborg’s training camp in Spain to complete a medical and finalize the transfer.
Widell, who is capable of playing in both central and wide attacking midfield positions, is known for his energy, dribbling ability, and knack for driving forward with the ball.
He has made 51 appearances for Aalborg, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists. A product of Malmo's youth system via Landskrona BoIS, he joined Aalborg in 2023.
Widell will join Swansea for pre-season training ahead of the 2025-26 season.
